Grind cinnabar fine enough and it gives up vermilion, the red that Chinese lacquer workers built up layer on layer. That red comes into the Cabinet here in cowhide, with a braid of the same red set against black.
Each stroke lands with a solid thud, and the tips bring a crisp sting once the rhythm quickens.
Cut from the same hide as Cinnabar, the stone this red comes from. The diamond braid checks red, metallic red and black down the handle, finished with Turk's head knots in metallic red laced with black. One of a kind. Once it goes, it is gone.
For the intermediate Top who knows red and black never go out of season.
